Vaccinations

Protecting your workforce through prevention and compliance

Vaccinations are vital in safeguarding employees, customers, and the wider community from preventable infectious diseases. For employers, they are a key element in fulfilling health and safety duties and keeping a resilient, safe workforce.

Under the Health & Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) 1974, employers have a legal obligation to assess the risk of exposure to disease and implement appropriate measures to protect workers.

But what are an Employer's responsibilities?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises that employers must:

  • Assess risks from exposure to bloodborne viruses (BBVs) under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations
  • Implement appropriate measures to protect workers and others from infection risks
Where a risk assessment identifies exposure to biological agents and effective vaccines are available, you must establish arrangements to:
  • Determine whether an employee is already immunised
  • Offer vaccinations to those who are not
It is recognised that immunisation is voluntary, and some workers may opt not to receive vaccines. However, employers must show that appropriate measures have been taken to manage and minimise risk.

Who requires workplace vaccination?

Certain occupations carry an increased risk of exposure to vaccine-preventable diseases, including:

  • Healthcare professionals
  • Laboratories
  • Dental and medical surgeries
  • Emergency an essential services
  • Plumbing and sewage work
  • Roles involving children, animals, or specific communities

Employees in these roles may be vulnerable to a range of infectious diseases and, if not immunised, may also pose a transmission risk to vulnerable individuals. For healthcare workers, specific immunisations are a legal requirement. In other sectors, an employer’s duty of care is guided by a thorough and documented risk assessment.

Overseas work & travel vaccinations

Employees who travel abroad for work may also require vaccinations to protect against region-specific diseases. It remains the employer’s responsibility to ensure staff have appropriate protection before travel.
